What Does an Astrophysicist Do?

Astrophysicists study the physical properties and behaviour of celestial objects and phenomena — from the physics of stars and planets to the origin and evolution of the universe. They use mathematical models, computer simulations, and observational data from telescopes and satellites. Work is primarily academic or at research institutes like ISRO, IUCAA, RRI, and TIFR.

Salary Range in India

  • PhD stipend: 3-4 LPA
  • Postdoc: 6-10 LPA
  • Faculty/scientist: 12-25 LPA
  • International research: 25-50+ LPA
