What Does a Filmmaker Do?

Filmmakers conceptualise, write, direct, and produce visual narratives for cinema, television, web series, documentaries, and advertising. The role involves storytelling, visual composition, working with actors and crew, post-production (editing, sound, VFX), and distribution. India's film industry is the world's largest by number of films produced, and the growth of OTT platforms (Netflix, Amazon, Disney+) has massively expanded opportunities.

Income Range

  • Assistant director: 2-5 LPA
  • Independent filmmaker: highly variable
  • Established director: 15-50+ LPA per project
  • Ad film director: 10-40+ LPA
