A filmmaker in India typically earns ₹2–5 lakh a year as an assistant director, ₹10–40 lakh or more as an ad-film director, and ₹15–50 lakh or more per project as an established feature or series director. Independent filmmaking is highly variable: income comes project by project and can be zero between projects.

What Does a Filmmaker Actually Do?

Filmmakers conceive, write, direct and produce visual stories for cinema, television, web series, documentaries and advertising. The work covers developing the story, raising money, casting, planning shoots, directing actors and crew, and overseeing editing, sound and visual effects. It is collaborative and logistical as much as creative, with long hours on set.
