Architect Salary in India (2026)
A salaried architect in India typically earns ₹3–6 lakh a year in the first two years, ₹6–15 lakh at mid level, and ₹15 lakh or more once they lead projects or run their own practice. Where you land depends less on the degree than on the kind of firm, the city and how quickly you take on project responsibility.
- Junior architect / trainee (0–2 years): ₹3–6 LPA, often lower at small studios outside the metros
- Project architect (3–7 years): ₹6–15 LPA at established firms in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru and Pune
- Senior architect / associate (8+ years): ₹15–30 LPA, with a share of project fees at larger practices
- Own practice: highly variable — fee-based, usually a percentage of construction cost, so income follows the pipeline of commissions
- Government and PSU roles (PWD, CPWD, development authorities): fixed pay-scale salaries with allowances and job security
Early pay in architecture is modest compared with engineering, and the field is known for long hours around deadlines. The curve steepens after registration with the Council of Architecture and a few completed projects, because clients and employers pay for the ability to take a building from sketch to site.
What Does an Architect Actually Do?
Architects turn a client's brief into buildings that are safe, usable and buildable. In practice that is a cycle of site visits and measurements, concept sketches, 3D models, detailed drawings for contractors, approvals from the local authority, and visits during construction to check the work matches the drawings. Early-career architects spend most of their time in drawing and modelling software (AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Rhino); senior architects spend more of it with clients, consultants and contractors.
Architects work in design studios, large multidisciplinary firms, real-estate developers, government departments, and as independent practitioners. Specialisations include residential, commercial, hospitality, urban design, landscape, sustainable design and heritage conservation. Expect the glamorous part — the concept — to be a small share of the job; coordination, approvals and detailing take up most of the calendar.
