Mechanical Engineer
Mechanical engineers design and manufacture machines, vehicles, and industrial systems. One of the broadest engineering disciplines with applications across every industry.
Mechanical Engineer Salary in India (2026)
A mechanical engineer in India typically earns ₹3.5–8 lakh a year at entry level, ₹8–18 lakh at mid level, and ₹18–35 lakh or more in senior and management roles. Pay varies sharply by sector: automotive, aerospace and product-design roles with strong CAD, simulation or software skills sit well above routine maintenance and production roles.
- Entry level (graduate engineer trainee, design or production engineer): ₹3.5–8 LPA
- Mid level (design, project, quality or plant engineer): ₹8–18 LPA
- Senior / management (project head, plant head, R&D lead): ₹18–35+ LPA
- PSU and government engineering jobs follow fixed pay scales with allowances
Mechanical engineering is a broad base, so salary depends on what you add to it: simulation (CFD/FEA), automation, EV and battery systems, or software skills. Early pay in core manufacturing can be modest, and many engineers move into management or specialise after a master's degree.
What Does a Mechanical Engineer Actually Do?
Mechanical engineers design, analyse, build and maintain anything with moving parts — engines, machines, vehicles, HVAC systems, pumps, turbines and medical devices. Their work spans modelling a part in CAD, running stress or heat-flow simulations, testing prototypes, choosing materials and manufacturing methods, and fixing problems on the shop floor.
The field is split into thermal engineering, manufacturing and production, automotive, design, HVAC, energy and robotics. Employers include automobile and component makers, heavy engineering and machinery companies, power plants, oil and gas, public-sector undertakings, aerospace and defence organisations, and consulting and design firms. Many engineers start on the shop floor or in a design office and move towards project or plant management.
