Lawyer Salary in India (2026)

A lawyer in India typically earns ₹15–25 lakh a year at entry level in a Tier 1 law firm, ₹25–50 lakh at mid level after five to eight years, and ₹50 lakh to ₹2 crore or more as a partner or senior advocate. Litigation income is more variable, ranging from ₹5 lakh to ₹30 lakh or more depending on practice and reputation. Top corporate lawyers earn at levels similar to investment bankers.

What Does a Lawyer Actually Do?

Lawyers advise clients on their rights and obligations, draft contracts and legal documents, negotiate settlements and represent clients in court. Corporate lawyers work on mergers, financing, regulatory compliance and contracts; litigators argue cases in trial courts, high courts and the Supreme Court; others specialise in intellectual property, tax, criminal, family or constitutional law.

Lawyers work in law firms, as independent advocates, in-house at companies and banks, in government legal services, NGOs and the judiciary after the appropriate exams. The work involves heavy reading, drafting, research and client management, with deadlines driven by court dates or deals. Advocacy in court needs enrolment with a State Bar Council and a pass in the AIBE.
