What Does a Doctor Do?

Doctors examine patients, diagnose diseases, prescribe treatments, and perform medical procedures. After MBBS (5.5 years including internship), doctors can practise as general physicians or specialise through MD/MS postgraduate programs in cardiology, orthopaedics, dermatology, psychiatry, and 30+ other specialisations. The path is long but the impact — and the earning potential — are immense.

Education Pathway

  1. Class 11-12: Science with PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
  2. NEET UG — the single gateway exam for MBBS in India
  3. MBBS: 4.5 years + 1 year compulsory internship
  4. MD/MS specialisation: 3 years (requires NEET PG)
  5. Super-specialisation (DM/MCh): 3 additional years for niche fields

Salary Range in India

  • MBBS (general practice): 5-15 LPA
  • MD/MS specialist: 15-40 LPA
  • Super-specialist/Senior consultant: 40-1Cr+ LPA
  • Private practice: highly variable, can be much higher
