What Does a Civil Servant Do?

Civil servants (IAS, IPS, IFS, and 20+ other services) are the administrative backbone of India. IAS officers serve as District Magistrates, manage state departments, and shape national policy. IPS officers lead police forces. IFS officers represent India abroad. The role combines immense responsibility, public impact, and job security — but the UPSC Civil Services Examination is one of the toughest in the world, with a selection rate below 0.2%.

Education Pathway

  1. Any graduation degree (arts, science, commerce, engineering, law)
  2. UPSC CSE Prelims → Mains → Interview
  3. Typical preparation: 1-3 years after graduation
  4. Age limit: 21-32 years (general category), with relaxations for reserved categories

Salary Range

  • Entry (SAS/IAS probationer): 8-10 LPA + housing + perks
  • Mid career (Joint Secretary): 15-20 LPA + perks
  • Senior (Secretary to GoI): 25-30 LPA + perks
  • Total compensation (including perks): significantly higher than base pay
