Psychologist (Counselling/Industrial)

Psychologist Salary in India (2026)

A psychologist in India typically earns ₹3–5 lakh a year at entry level, ₹6–15 lakh at mid level, ₹10–25 lakh in corporate industrial-organisational roles, and ₹8–30 lakh or more in private practice. Pay depends on specialisation, setting and how well you build your clientele or corporate relationships.

• Entry level (counsellor, school or NGO psychologist): ₹3–5 LPA
• Mid level (senior counsellor, consultant): ₹6–15 LPA
• I/O psychology (corporate, HR, talent roles): ₹10–25 LPA
• Private practice: ₹8–30+ LPA, depending on clients and reputation

Early-career income is modest in schools, NGOs and clinics, and the best-paid routes combine psychology with business settings such as talent assessment, leadership development and organisational research. Online counselling platforms have created extra paths but with variable pay.

What Does a Psychologist Actually Do?

Psychologists study human behaviour, thinking and emotion and apply this to help people and organisations. Counselling psychologists support people with relationship issues, career transitions, stress and personal growth. Industrial-organisational (I/O) psychologists improve workplace productivity, team dynamics and employee wellbeing. Unlike clinical psychologists, who treat mental disorders, counselling and I/O psychologists generally work with healthy populations facing everyday challenges.

Psychologists work in schools, colleges, hospitals, NGOs, corporate HR and talent teams, research institutes, consulting firms and private practice. Specialisations include counselling, child and educational psychology, I/O, health psychology and sports psychology. Registration and licensing rules differ by specialisation, so check requirements for the path you choose.
