Pay is generally lower than in corporate careers, and many people choose the field for purpose.

  • Entry level (NGO): ₹3–5 LPA
  • Government and corporate CSR roles: ₹5–12 LPA
  • International organisations (UN agencies and large donors): ₹12–30+ LPA
  • Senior programme director / head: ₹15–25 LPA

Pay depends on the type of organisation, the funding behind the role and your seniority. Social workers with a master's degree, specialist skills in areas such as monitoring and evaluation or public health, and experience in international development reach the higher bands.

What Does a Social Worker Actually Do?

Social workers support individuals, families and communities facing challenges such as poverty, abuse, addiction, disability and discrimination. They assess needs, provide counselling, connect people with services, run community programmes, advocate for policy change and monitor outcomes. The work involves fieldwork, case management, documentation and cooperation with government and community groups.

Social workers are employed by NGOs, government welfare departments, hospitals, schools, corporate CSR teams and international organisations such as UNICEF and WHO. Specialisations include child welfare, medical and psychiatric social work, community development, labour welfare, disability and gender work. India's CSR mandate for larger companies has widened the number of professional roles.
